Get out into the environment
ESS EEs with primary environmental data (water quality testing, biodiversity surveys, soil sampling) score significantly higher than those using only secondary data.

Systems Thinking
Show interconnections
ESS is about systems β€” show how the environmental issue connects to social, economic, and political factors. Reductionist analysis that ignores system interactions misses the essence of ESS.

Environmental Indices
Use quantitative measures
Biodiversity (Simpson’s, Shannon-Weiner), pollution indices, ecological footprint, carbon accounting. Use established environmental measurement tools and explain them.

Societal Analysis
Policy and stakeholders
Identify the human stakeholders (governments, industries, communities, NGOs) in your environmental issue and evaluate their roles, interests, and power.

Assessment & Common Mistakes

Assessed on: environmental knowledge, methodology (especially primary fieldwork), systems thinking, and integration of scientific and societal analysis. ESS EEs that treat the subject as only a science or only a social science miss the interdisciplinary requirement.

ESS EEs often try to cover too much β€” global climate change, all of ocean pollution, international biodiversity. Narrowing to a local, specific, measurable case study is always stronger. A stream in your local area that you can actually test produces far better EE material than a broad global topic.
